June 16th, 2010: Broadcast Pioneers to Salute 45 Years of KYW Newsradio
Posted: June 7th, 2010
It was 45 years ago that phrases like "In the news at this hour," "at the editor's desk," and "All News All the Time" entered the Philadelphia area vocabulary. On June 19, 1965, middle-of-the-road music station WRCV-AM became KYW-AM. Three months later it started broadcasting news, sports and weather 24 hours a day. An illustrious panel of KYW veterans will report on the highlights of all those hours, days, weeks and years at the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia luncheon on Wednesday, June 16 at the Bala Golf Club, 2200 Belmont Avenue, Philadelphia. For reservations:

Broadcast Pioneers president-elect Jerry Klein, himself a former Newsradio editor, anchor and reporter, will moderate the discussion panel, which will include:
Harry Donahue, the current morning anchor and a fixture at the station for over 35 years
Bud Galow, a KYW Newsradio technician for over 40 years
Jay Lloyd, KYW Newsradio Suburban Bureau Chief for a third of a century
Richard Maloney, a KYW Newsradio reporter for 20 years
Roy Shapiro, KYW’s Vice President and General Manager for two decades
Fred Walters, former KYW reporter and executive editor, and the person “at the editor’s desk” at the moment it all started
Calling in on a live “remote” will be Steve Porter, Newsradio’s very first anchor. Current KYW Director of Programming Steve Butler will get things started with introductory remarks.
The meet and greet reception starts at noon, and lunch begins at 12:30 pm. Cost is $25 a person for a three-course meal with a crudité table and cash bar. Free parking is available.
